Could someone recommend an approach for solution for monitoring specific
connections between hosts over a wan/lan. I need to keep something running
on our network that will allow for monitoring these connections. I have
heard netflow can do this, I just wanted to get more feedback.

thx,

Try Ethereal. It's a free download.

netflow is at heart an accounting device -- such and such a connection
was created then, sent this much traffic, and stopped whenever.

If you need to monitor packet -content- then netflow is inappropriate.
