Hi I am thinking of obtaining a Vigor2100vg to connect to NTL cable
I understand it has a voip / sip port , so a normal phone plugs in,
( so can be online with computer off)
the normal phone only has a number pad, so how does one call a sip
address in user number@domain.org format?
am I missing a fundamental?
any other comments on the router would be welcome

Yes. You call a SIP number by the number if it is on the same network as
you, or with the relevant access code if it is on another VoIP network.
For example one of my Sipgate numbers is in the form 314xxxx - from
Sipgate you would dial just that. From another VoIP supplier with a link
agreement to Sipgate, such as Gradwell, you would dial the relevant access
code (***777 in this instance) followed by the SIP number.
From a normal phone line you would dial the full geographic number. This
particular number has a Birmingham 0121 prefix so you would dial 0121 314
xxxx.

If you were Registered and logged in, you could reply and use other advanced thread options Draytek Vigor routers are recognised for quality and reliability, but as
they are 'office class' kit they aren't cheap.
Mine hasn't missed a bit in 2 years.

Check the manual: usually it's at least possible to enter the IP address
using combinations of special keys as replacements for the '.' and ':'.
For instance, this applies to the Grandstream HandyTone-486 ATA:
To make a direct IP calling, first pick up the analog phone
or turn on the speakerphone on the analog phone, then follow
Section 4.1 with voice prompt 47, followed by the 12-digit
target IP address. Destination ports can also be specified
using *4 (encoding for ":") followed by the encoded port
number [...] Examples: [...] If the target IP address/port
is 192.168.1.20:5062, then the dialing convention would be:
Voice Prompt with option 47, then 192168001020*45062 followed
by pressing the "#" key if it is configured as a send key or
wait for 5 seconds.
Of course, registering with a SIP proxy (generally made available by a
provider) will make your life easier allowing you to dial only the
telephone number...
