I was affected by this today. I read USENET almost everyday and I
didn't learn about this until the day it happened. I imagine it'll
impact many Telecom Digest readers.

John,
You can read the digest via email, which was the original method of
distribution _before_ comp.dcom.telecom or Usenet existed, and which
is still the preferred medium for many readers.
Send an email to majordomo at telecom-digest.org, with the word "help"
in the *BODY* of the message. The subject line is ignored.

Perhaps you can switch to DSL and select a competitive provider that
offers USENET.
Unlike the monoply robber-baron cable companies, DSL does have some
competition.

I'm a little sore at our local telco.
Only half of my neighborhood has DSL. I have tried unsuccessfully to get
them to run it to my half of the neighborhood. They recently acquired an
Atlanta-based "Baby Bell" and part of the deal was they would offer $10
DSL throughout their territory, even areas where it wasn't currently
available.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19305115/
This article doesn't cite the provision that it'd be offered throughout
their coverage area, but reports at the time stated this.
I called recently about this and they again told me no DSL. I cited this
agreement and they didn't know what I was talking about. I asked to speak
to a superior. She told me in no uncertain terms they had no plans to
expand their DSL network in my part of town.
About this time Road Runner offered a deal I couldn't refuse. I could
have digital phone, cable, and Internet for less than I was paying for
analog phone, rabbit ears, and Internet. Even the price after the special
offered expired is less than I was paying before. Add to this I can count
on one hand the number of times Road Runner has gone down since I got it
in 2003 and still have fingers left over.
I did find a free USENET service, but I do plan to subscribe to
comp.dcom.telecom via email.
Thanks,
John

Compeetition, even when it's only a duopoly (and only in name)
is a useful thing.
Our local cableco raised our internet cost dramatically
about six months ago. I called in and they explained
we had been on a special "one year offer".
I replied that in that case, I was going to thank them
for the 12 months but that since there were other
providers who were cheaper, I'd have to say goodbye.
They extedned the cheaper price for another year.
(I did wind up paying that one month at the higher
rate. They were supposed to drop it back, but that
got lost somewhere. I'll live.).
Anyway, the point is that it never hurts to ask.
Politely, of course.

Not clear. I received an email response (which may or may not show up here)
to my question about what the Qwest fiber-to-the-neighborhood meant which
said that if you elected to use the available higher bandwidth you *had* to
sign up with Qwest.net as the ISP. Seeing as I've had this ISP and email
address for something like 30 years I'd be very reluctant to switch, even
for more speed, but in effect it says Qwest is locking out competition in
some respects. (Right now I'm using the highest speed available through
their conventional DSL, but they let me pick whatever ISP I wanted.)
