Im trying to sort out a connection between the surfboard 5100 (telewest
ISP) and a linksys WRT54GC. so i can have wireless connection for a
Dell laptop, ive gone into the router settings and set it up for PPPOE
connection (as advised from telewest) but there is no connection. the
modem works fine connected to the main computer via the usb but ive
tried the modem on a Dell laptop using the network connection but i get
a limited connection warning saying it cant assign an ip address. could
this be the issue?

ive looked on the website for the modem and they say you can connect
using a router... so what am i doing wrong???

Can anybody help me before this equipment has a nasty accident with a
6lb hammer...

Your modem might need to be power-cycled every time you connect a new
MAC address. Try powering it off for a minute, repower, then connect
either another computer or the router.

...additionally, if Telewest requires a specific MAC address (i.e., your
original computer NIC's MAC address) to be connected to the modem, you
can clone that MAC address into the router to make the router appear to
be the originally connected computer. Telewest support should be able
to tell you if this is required.

Does anyone else think that it is odd to use PPPOE for a cable modem?
