A new type of spectrum licence enabling broadband access on trains, via
a satellite link, has been made available by UK communications industry
regulator Ofcom.

Wi-Fi access is offered by some train operators already, provided
through a number of terminals situated along train tracks.
The new licence type will enable companies to install 'satellite
earth stations' on trains in order to provide a broadband service by
satellite. Hotspots on trains would enable services to be delivered
from an on-board transmitter, straight to laptop computers or handheld
devices, allowing customers to download content and possibly use VoIP.

The spectrum licences, which are for use of the 14-14.25GHz band, may
allow train operators to introduce more reliable, faster mobile
broadband connections for customers.

Ofcom is making the licence available on demand, under its rules for
licensing. Trials and testing of the products have been conducted in
various countries in Europe and more are expected.
