Hello,

I'm new here- in fact- as you will soon discover- I'm not even a
lurker- all this technology is over my head.

We have kind of a mystery here at home. Where we lived before, we had
cable through Time-Warner, and we also opted to have our internet and
digital phone service through them. It worked out really well because
Bell South (the Ma Bell company here) charged us so much more, where
Time-Warner has free unlimited local and long distance for just $39.99
a month. Well, when we moved we called Time-Warner to come and start up
our service here. The cable (TV) and computer started working
immediately, but our digital phone service only works upstairs in the
office, and the only reason it's working is because it's plugged
directly into the modem next to the computer.. that's the only way they
could get it to work- but it should work in any jack in the house once
the guy comes out and connects it- with digital phone service once one
jack works- it sends a signal to each jack in the house and they all
work-right? There is a phone jack downstairs which is not working
which we need to have working, and also one in our bedroom we would
like to have working, so we don't have to have the phone in just one
place in the house- on the computer desk. We've had 3 cable guys out
here, and then a 4th one who is not just a regular "cable guy", but a
technician who is contracted out by Time Warner- with different tools,
to try to get the other jacks working. He went under the house and he
says it's a mystery- because the jacks are wired and connected
correctly, and he himself has no idea why they aren't working. So he's
going to refer it back to Time Warner, and I know it's just going to go
on and on. But he did have a suggestion. The people who lived here
before had ethernet- there are ethernet cables in almost all the rooms.
He said we could use them for phone service- but he doesn't know who
would be able to do that. My husband and I have never been clear on
what ethernet is- we have a vague idea that it is for networking
computers- so how would it work for phone service? Anyone know? Can
someone explain it to us and suggest who we would call?

Thanks alot,

Karen

Ghostbusters :-)

You have one chance to do this yourself. If you have a phone jack
upstairs near the computer, try plugging the modem (probably Analog
Terminal Adapter) into that jack and plug a regular telephone into the
jacks downstairs.

If all the jacks are multipled together, you may be able to backfeed
the whole house from the upstairs room and, if you're lucky, the cable
is not connected outside to the world. You could use a standard "T"
adapter to get service at the upstairs location.

If any of this fails, try looking in the phone book under Telephone
Equipment and Dealers---

OK- I'll pass this on to my hubby- he's good with electronics, but he's
never heard of this.

If anyone else has any suggestions, please pass them on.

Thanks alot,

Karen

Carl gave you a chunk of the answer, lets see if I can fill in some of
the holes.

I will make a WAG that the downstairs phone(s) and the office phone were
on seperate lines. What you need to do is locate the NIJ (Network
Interface Jack) for the house and:

1) Make sure that the house internal wireing is disconnected from the
Bell South line(s).

2) Make sure that all of the inhouse phone jacks are connected together.
The NIJ is usually the most convenient place to do this. Line 1 of all
jacks is USUALLY either the red/green pair (older wireing) or the
blue/blue-white pair (newer wireing). Open up all the jacks and make
sure that the red/green pair (or the blue/blue-white pair) connect to
the screw terminals marked (usually) R & G. Then do the same thing at
the NIJ.
