In my house, initially there were two phone lines. One was used for
phone and the other for fax. I cancelled the fax line a long time ago,
and this line is conveniently next to the Vonage D-Link VTA Adapter.
Instead of having to connect the adapter with a cable that would go
across the wall, I came up with the idea of joining the two lines
inside the Network Inteface Box. This way, if I join them with a
regular telephone line joining device, I wont have to do any more
complicated wiring and just make all of the outlets in the house
respond and use only the 1 Vonage line I have. This way I wont have to
do any wiring inside the house, make it simple, and save money on the
wire to connect 20 feet away into the line 1 phone jack.
Finally, my question is: if I connect line 1 and line 2 together to
make only one, would this present any problems? Engineering wise, I see
it as just making a short circuit and therefore line 1 and line 2 will
be one together. So it makes sense that it would work.
As a second thought, should I join the two plugs or connect the two
jacks together? I think the jacks are part of my houses jacks, and that
the plugs coming from the screws are part of the bellsouth network, is
this right?
My NIU looks like the one below, except mine has wires as it should.

So from my understanding the black jacks are actually part of my house
so connecting the ends of the cable into one will just make line 1 and
2, only one. For example:
