If you were  Registered and logged in, you could reply and use other advanced thread options
I'm new to vpn. For now, I have a simple question. Undoubtedly, I will
have more as I proceed with my setup. First of all, an assumption: I
need a static IP from my cable internet provider. Now my question:

Do I need any additional hardware beyond my Windows or Linux server?

No you don't.


no-ip.org


does nicely with non-static IP addresses for VPN. (period)

No. See http://www.openvpn.net for one possible software-only solution.

Static IP is not required if you use a dynamic DNS service such as
dyndns.org.
