I am learning about CDP (working on CCNA still), and I thought I understood it
well enough.. then I read (Sybex CCNA 5th) that you can
only get the IP address of directly connected devices.. does that imply that you
can get other info from remote devices with CDP? In my
home lab, I can't seem to, and at work where we have at least 12 routers and
several switches, we only get neighbor info also... So how,
if at all, can you get info of devices that are not directly connected (not
including devices connected through an off-brand switch).

Thank you!

All information you can get with CDP is from your directly connected
devices. Nothing from remote devices.
For example you can see your directly connected switch but not devices
behind the switch.

(Exception: It is possible to tunnel CDP packets thorough the switch...)
