I know that the 7100, 8100 and 6200 analog phones cannot be used on a
non PBX, since it has a message waiting lamp since it may short circut.
Is there a way to turn off the circut or unplug the wire, so I could
use that phone for a non PBX system without worrying about knocking out
a phone line? Thank you in advance - Steven

Message waiting lamp to short the line? Where did you get that information
from?

Well, if it uses "Stacked" DC (~96Vdc) to light the lamp and the neon
lamp shorts...

I guess you could take the phone apart and cut the lead to the lamp.

I don't know about the AT&T/Lucent 7100 series, but the 8100 and 6200
series should certainly work OK on a POTS line without any
modifications. They both use an LED circuit for the message-waiting
lamp rather than a traditional neon lamp. Because of this, they don't
load down the line like a neon lamp.

Actually, even phones with neon message lamps will often work OK on a
POTS line. The only problem with phones having neon message lamps is
that if a telephone company tech tests the "leakage" of the line with a
Tempo Sidekick, they may get a "shorted line" reading. This is because
the Tempo puts out a high enough DC voltage in its leakage test mode to
"fire" the neon lamp.
