I have had conflicting information about the use of 802.3af power over
ethernet at 1000base-T on Cat5E cable.
Some people tell me there is no problem, other says that it is not
supported. I have googled and read the 802.3af spec and it does seem
to be supported. Can anyone shed any light on the current status.
I am aware that 802.3at POE+ is designed to operate at a higher power
and at gigabit speeds, but is the current situation just down to
individual manufacturers.

IEEE 802.3af is no longer, so you need to go to Clause 33 or 802.3-2005.
Clause 33 is in with the 100 Mb/s Ethernet clauses, but it applies to
all twisted pair POE options, which means from 10 to 1000 Mb/s, at least
for now.
